In order to install Stuffit Expander you have to download and mount the DMG file and copy the app to your Mac's Applications folder. Although Stuffit Expander is a simple decompression tool, it. StuffIt Expander supports a wide variety of files you download everyday on the web or receive in email. More than 30 formats are supported including archives created with the latest StuffIt 2011, WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, 7zX.

StuffIt is a powerful and comprehensive archive manager that offers a number of additional features: it allows you to encrypt your archives, edit the contents of existing archives, create self-extracting archives, schedule backups and various compression tasks, and do many more things. In addition to the proprietary StuffIt SITX format, it supports the already established archive formats, such as ZIP and RAR. This said, the SITX format has a lot of advantages, including better compression levels (which means smaller archives), so you may want to consider using it as the default format for your archives.

When it comes to downsides, I think the interface could use some improvement: it definitely needs to be a bit simpler, despite it already includes wizards that attempts to simplify the basic archive management tasks (creation and extraction). As it is, the interface may look a bit overwhelming to those who don't care about advanced options or compression parameters and just want to quickly extract or create archives. Still, StuffIt is a great tool despite that and its compression possibilities are unmatched by other applications.

Pros

  • Allows using the powerful StuffIt proprietary format
  • Supports encryption
  • Includes scheduling options

StuffIt Expander 5.5 was the most commonly used archive extractor in the later 90's on Mac OS 8 until the standard edition 7.0 came bundled with Mac OS 9. Until version 7, StuffIt Expander 5.5 was a must have tool especially for people surfing the web as everything was compressed and archived in .sit or .hqx as a way to preserve resource forks on web servers. Without archiving, any Mac software would have been rendered useless the instant it would be stored on a PC server. That's why StuffIt Expander 5.5 has always been freely distributed on various software compilations and has always been free to use.

StuffIt Expander could extract a wide variety of archive types such as to name a few: .sit, .zip, .tar, .bin, .cpt

IMPORTANT: Stuffit archive segments (file.1, file.2, file.3) cannot be expanded with Stuffit Expander alone; They either require Stuffit EE (Expansion Enhancer) or Stuffit Deluxe. If you plan on writing DropStuff 5.5 to 1.4MB floppy disks and installing it on an old Mac, you should begin by installing Stuffit Deluxe 3.5.1 on that old Mac first. Stuffit Deluxe 3.5.1 will enable you to join the 2 segments and obtain a regular .sit archive, which in turn you will expand using Stuffit Expander 5.5 from this page. Before installing DropStuff 5.5, you should remove everything Stuffit Deluxe 3.5.1 related (namely the 'Aladdin', 'Stuffit Engine' and 'Viewer Engine' under System Folder > Extensions). You do not need Stuffit Deluxe 3.5.1 anymore as DropStuff 5.5 comes with Stuffit EE, which will give you the archive segment expansion benefits you had with Stuffit Deluxe.

DropStuff 5.5 is the opposite of Stuffit Expander, it lets you compress/archive Mac files to a binary safe format such as .sit. Using DropStuff, you could archive any files you want and copy them to a PC file system without any fear of file corruption.
